WAY 103 / 03 CHANGE

Let other people finish the painting

Use can reveal extensions the original author could not design alone.

When

You are trying to control every meaning, behavior or adaptation of what you made.

The Way

Observe what people invent around the work. Participation can reveal an unseen function, language or route worth allowing into the design.

Try

Watch someone use the work without correction. Record one improvised behavior and develop it in a separate version.

Notice

What can the work become once authorship is shared?

Reference quote and source
“Reading is a skilled act, like ice skating or playing the French horn, and it’s hard to learn even for people who are highly educated because they’ve spent most of their lives learning how to read and write. It’s the only art form that requires skill from the audience, because the reader has to read well and take responsibility for the experience. It’s almost like playing an instrument, except the instrument is your mind and the music starts from small marks on a page. With TV, all you have to do is look at it, and I’ve found that trying to motivate a college audience to engage deeply can feel like you’re competing with just one more TV show.”
